The members of AHPWA are disappointed in the findings of Justice Stone to dismiss our application for a judicial review of the Federal Minister for Environment and Water decision to not call in the Anvil Hill Coal Mine development and declare it a controlled action under the terms of the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act.

Lawyers for a lobby group have told a Sydney court the federal Environment Minister, Malcolm Turnbull, did not properly consider the impact of the Anvil Hill coal mine in the upper Hunter Valley.

The New South Wales Government approved the open-cut coal mine with more than 80 conditions earlier this year.

The project, west of Muswellbrook, had also been referred to the Federal Government to consider the impacts of the mine.

The landmark legal challenge to the Anvil Hill coal mine took another step forward yesterday, with the Federal Court setting a hearing date of August 22nd 2007.

The Environmental Defender's Office (EDO) is acting on behalf of the Anvil Hill Project Watch Association (AHPWA) against the Federal Minister for the Environment and Water Resources and Centennial Hunter Pty Ltd.


A great success! Protest Camp on 2nd to 3rd June

On 2-3 June, 2007 more than 400 people from around New South Wales gathered in peaceful protest near the proposed Anvil Hill mine site.

To voice their opposition the hundreds lined up to form a huge human sign reading "Save Anvil Hill".

Local speakers addressed impacts of Hunter Valley coal mines, including climate change, loss of the wine industry, increased pollution, and water use.

Despite talking up the urgency of the climate change threat, NSW's leaders are not tackling the problem at its source: coal.
